The English East India Company annexed Punjab in 1849 after defeating the Sikh Empire in the Second Anglo-Sikh War. The decisive battle of Gujrat, fought on 21st February 1849, marked the end of the war. Following this victory, Punjab was formally annexed, and it became a part of British India, with Lord Dalhousie overseeing the administration.
